Former Birmingham City and Aston Villa player Jota has announced he has retired aged 31. The Spaniard has ended his playing career.
The winger has revealed he doesn’t want to continue playing just for the money and made the decision to hang up his boots at a still relatively young age. He has now walked away from the game after last playing for Alaves.
“I am retired. I wanted to keep in my memory how happy I was for so many years. I was afraid to continue playing football and not take this memory of my professional journey with me. I didn’t want to play just for the money and without motivation.
“In the middle of my last season in 2021, I lost the ambition that I had in the previous years. And I didn’t want that to happen. I had been a pro for 12 or 13 years, I could have continued still five or six years earning a lot of money, but I would have been wrong.
Fate of the Midlands
Birmingham rushed to sign the striker in 2017 and he made 75 appearances in all competitions during his two-year spell, scoring eight goals. Prior to his move to St Andrew’s, he had been a hit at Brentford and scored 23 goals in 75 games for the Bees.
He was the Blues in 2019 and had a spell with rivals Aston Villa under their former boss Dean Smith. The former Celta Vigo man was part of their squad that won promotion to the Premier League a few years ago but his playing time at Villa Park quickly dried up.
