A look to the East
The head coach Brenda Howe starts his 14e season-leading Eagles and finished the 2021-22 season strong last spring.
Eastern finished fifth at the Big Sky Championships after being selected to finish ninth in the preseason. Jaelin Ishikawa finished ninth in the standings and earned a second consecutive top-10 finish at the conference championships. Ishikawa also earned an honorable mention conference All-Big Sky for the second consecutive season, averaging 76.7 points per round.
In addition to the Big Sky Championships, the Eagles earned two top-10 finishes during the spring schedule. In the team’s final regular season tournament, Eastern finished seventh at the Bobcat Desert Classic. Ishikawa was key for the team again, scoring 225 to place sixth in the competition. The Eagles would also take 10th place at the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invite with 943 total hits. Kami Twining tied for 10th in the tournament with 224 strokes overall.
Eastern returns their entire roster from a season ago, including Ishikawa and Twining. They are joined by ghosts Morgan Baum, Stephanie Chelac, Carisa Padilla and Meghan Singh.
Twining finished twice in the top 10 and once in the top 10 in his first season, with his best run coming at the Lady Thunderbird Invite in the spring. The Liberty Lake, Wash., native shot a 71 in the third round of the tournament for her best performance over 18 holes.
In Baum’s third year at Eastern, she recorded a top-five finish at the Battle for Old Works in the fall of 2021, shooting 234 to earn fourth place in the tournament. Baum also finished in the top 20 at the Griz Challenge in the fall, recording a score of 155 to place 11e.
Chelack made an impact in his second season with the Eagles, helping the team to a top-five finish at the Big Sky Championships. Chelack had his best playoff tournament, scoring 233.
Padilla was also an important part for Eastern in its second season. Padilla recorded a score of 234 at the Big Sky Championship, where she tied her best 18-hole score of 75 in the first round.
Singh’s first season at Eastern was marked by a tie for third place at the 2021 Griz Challenge. Singh posted a 150, including a 74 in the second round to tie his best 18-hole score of the season. The redshirt-junior also finished tied for 14e way to the Battle of the Old Works 2021. At the Big Sky Championships, Singh shot a 231 which included his best 36-hole score of 149.
Joining the roster for the 2022-23 season are a pair of real freshmen in Kylee Gregory and Brooke Mahler. Gregory comes to Eastern from Los Alamitos, California and Mahler is originally from Buckley, Washington.
The East will have two more competitions this fall. The Eagles will host the Eagle Invitational from Monday, September 26 through Wednesday, September 28. The fall program concludes at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, hosted by Seattle. The competition runs from Monday October 3 to Tuesday October 4.
