Here’s the latest ACC sports news from The Associated Press | National sports
UNDATED (AP) – Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams isn’t a typical transfer as he followed Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma and plays for the same coach he had all year last. But his quarterback transfer status isn’t unusual at all. No position has been more impacted by NCAA rule changes allowing players to transfer without spending a season. The top two quarterbacks in the Class of 2021 according to the composite recruiting site rankings compiled by 247Sports have already left their home schools. Williams was seeded second. Quinn Ewers was ranked first and transferred from Ohio State to Texas.
UNDATED (AP) — Last season, 30 major college football programs made coaching changes. They included Southern California, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and LSU. Will this season be calmer? Not necessarily. AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo says a number of coaches are on the hot season before the season has even started. They include Scott Frost of Nebraska and Bryan Harsin of Auburn.
CLEMSON, SC (AP) — Clemson defensive end Xavier Thomas will miss up to six weeks with a foot injury sustained in the team’s scrimmage on Saturday. Defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin said Thomas will need surgery and could be back for the fourth-ranked Tigers before the end of September. Thomas is a 6-foot-5, 265-pound fifth-year senior who has been a big contributor to Clemson’s stacked defensive line. He started 10 of the 12 games he played last season, with 3½ sacks and two forced fumbles.
UNDATED (AP) — Alabama is No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25 for the second straight season. It is also the ninth time overall, the second in the history of the polls. The Crimson Tide received 54 of 63 first-place votes. Ohio State is No. 2 with six first-place votes. Defending national champion Georgia is third with three first-place votes. Clemson is No. 4 and Notre Dame rounds out the top five. The Tide’s No. 1 preseason ranking is the seventh in 15 years. Since the start of the preseason rankings in 1950, only Oklahoma has been No. 1 in the initial poll more than Alabama.
UNDATED (AP) – A brief look at the teams that took part in the Associated Press’ preseason college football poll.
UNDATED (AP) – The Associated Press college football preseason poll comes with the promise of an exciting season for teams that make the Top 25. AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo suggests a good dose of caution, unless you’re rooting for Alabama. Last season was particularly volatile in the Top 25: 14 teams that started the season ranked end up out of the standings. The average for the previous decade was 9.5 teams that withdrew from the ballot. Russo says the top-ranked Crimson Tide is the closest thing to a sure bet in college football.
